Residents were asked which adult education classes they attended anywhere and which they would attend if it were in the Isle of Wedmore. 25% of residents take part in some sort of adult education. This is what they do, in order of preference:
| Keep fit/aerobics | 6% |
| Art or crafts | 6% |
| Yoga or meditation | 5% |
| Other sports (squash | 5% |
| Volleyball etc) | |
| Basic computing | 4% |
| Languages | 3% |
| Advanced computing | 3% |
| Badminton | 3% |
| Drama, music, singing | 3% |
| Counselling | 1% |
| Making your experience count | 1% |
| Self-defence/martial arts | 1% |
| Creative writing | 1% |
| Parenting Skills | 1% |
| None | 75% |
Generally, men are less interested than women in adult education. Less interested too are the over 65s, farmers, lower socio-economic groups, residents of Theale and people who had lived in the parish for more than 30 years or whose families had lived here for generations.
It is interesting though that if classes were available locally, then 48% of residents would be interested in taking part in adult education. Here is what people would do if it were to be available locally, in order of preference:
| Languages | 19% |
| Art or crafts | 17% |
| Keep fit/aerobics | 17% |
| Advanced computing | 11% |
| Other sports (squash, volleyball) | 8% |
| Basic computing | 7% |
| Counselling | 6% |
| Drama, music, | 5% |
| Making your experience count | 5% |
| Badminton | 5% |
| Self defence/martial arts | 5% |
| Parenting Skills | 3% |
| None | 52% |
The fact that the number of residents who would take adult education classes if they were provided locally is so much higher than those currently attending classes shows that there could be far more opportunities for adult education in the parish than are currently available. In particular language classes, more arts and craft classes, keep fit and advanced computing (although this last potentially covers a wide range of skills and applications some of which may be offered at IT for the Terrified).
Interestingly, farmers were particularly interested in a local counselling course and in advanced computing courses, further evidence perhaps of the challenging and changing times faced by farmers.
The under 25s were only really grabbed by the thought of self-defence/martial arts classes.
The groups consistently least likely to consider adult education were the over 65s and those on the lowest incomes.
