A Position Statement on the Wedmore Surgery, January 2003

The current partners of the Axbridge and Wedmore Surgery will not be undertaking any development of a new surgery in Wedmore.

The situation regarding the current surgery is under negotiation with the present owners. The surgery is currently leased and that lease has now expired.

The partners are committed to having a presence in Wedmore provided that Somerset Coast Primary Care Trust continues to maintain the current level of financial support.

The Parish Council kindly gave us an option on land at the end of the Lerburne, but after taking advice from chartered surveyors , our accountant and solicitor and balance with the uncertainty within the NHS at the current time, a development project was not thought to be viable.

Primary Care as the "gatekeeper" to the NHS is bearing the brunt of government reform and uncertainty about the future provision of Primary Health Care has caused a crisis in national morale and recruitment. A new contract is currently being negotiated which has been born from the dissatisfaction with the current work situation.

The Practice will strive to provide an excellent level of care to patients who attend the Wedmore Surgery despite the difficulties imposed by the system.
